Hello 2013/14 Vikings! Welcome to my class. Here's a little bit about me:
This is my 11th year at VVMS. I teach 7th grade Life Science (including Honors Life Science) and 8th grade Earth Science-Honors. I am also the Boys Basketball Coach. I'm 35 years old and I live in Snohomish with my wife, Debbie, our 1 year-old son, Norman and our beloved dog, Luz. My hobbies and interests are hiking, backpacking, surfing, fly-fishing, basketball and football, listening to music and eating good food.
I was born in Colville, WA in 1977. We lived on a farm in a remote place called Summit Valley, where my formal education began in a two-room, country schoolhouse. My family moved to Cheney, WA when I was in 4th grade. I graduated from Cheney High School in 1996. From 1996-2000 I attended the University of Washington (GO DAWGS!), earning a B.S. in Zoology with a minor in Wildlife Science. From 2001-2002 I attended Eastern Washington University to obtain a B.A. in Education and Washington state teacher certification. I was hired to teach at VVMS in the summer of 2003.
During and after college, I have also held a variety of interesting jobs to include: DNR Wildland Firefighter
(summers 1998-1999), Fisheries Technician
(2000-2001), Tour Guide
(summers 2001-2006) in Sitka, AK (where I met Debbie), Park Ranger
at Mt. Rainier (summer of 2009). I have also been fortunate enough to do some extensive traveling during that time, to various U.S. cities and wilderness, as well as other countries such as England, Scotland, Ireland, Mexico and Costa Rica. In 2008, I took time away from VVMS to teach english (as a second language) in Santiago, Chile. In a total of 7.5 months in South America, Debbie and I tra
veled all over Chile, Argentina, Bolivia, Peru and Ecuador. It was an amazing experience for both personal and educational reasons, and one that I will never forget... even though I admit that I have already forgotten much of my spanish. All of these experiences were possible because of my education, which has enabled me to pursue countless opportunities. Furthermore, because of these experiences I have learned to value my lifelong education.
Debbie and I were married on August 8th, 2009 in Seattle, WA. We lived together in the Seattle area until last summer. When we learned that Norman was on his way into our world, we decided to move to Snohomish so that I could be close to work. Norman William Stewart was born on August 6th, 2012. We could not be happier to have him in our life. After all of the amazing adventures, travels and crazy times, being father is the best feeling ever! Now that we have lived in Snohomish for over a year we have really settled in. We have made great, new friends and Debbie has found a job at Snohomish High School, teaching English.
I love teaching Science at VVMS, so much that I have stayed for longer than I have ever stayed anywhere. We have a great staff here at VVMS and an outstanding Science Department! I enjoy teaching students about the natural world, which I believe to be a critical part of education. I also enjoy interacting with students, sharing my sense of humor, motivating and teaching students to use critical thinking skills and common sense. I hope that you will find my class interesting, fun, and engaging. I will do my best to provide you with lasting memories and knowledge. See you in class.
